How do I enroll in Medicare if I’m already receiving Social Security benefits?
Will my enrollment in Medicare be automatic if I’m already receiving Social Security?
Yes, if you are already receiving Social Security benefits when you become eligible for Medicare, your enrollment will typically be automatic for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance). Here's how it works:
Turning 65: If you're receiving Social Security retirement benefits before your 65th birthday, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. You will receive your Medicare card in the mail about 3 months before your 65th birthday.
Under 65 and Receiving SSDI: If you are under 65 and have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months, your enrollment will also be automatic. You will be enrolled in both Part A and Part B starting the 25th month of receiving SSDI benefits.
While your enrollment in Part A is typically premium-free, Part B comes with a monthly premium. If you do not want to enroll in Part B right away (for example, if you have other coverage like employer-sponsored insurance), you will need to decline Part B when you receive your Medicare card.
